MTB Route from Tortosa to Estació de Bot
This round trip is one of the most popular with tourists and residents of the area. It is one of the stages of the Val del Zafán – Baix Ebre Greenway, in this case the stretch between the cities of Tortosa and Bot. Although the route is over 70 kilometres long, it is quite easy as the track is asphalted and the height gains over the whole route are technically undemanding.
To get to the Greenway from the Hotel, ride along Avinguda Ports Tortosa-Beseit, then cross to the right onto Carretera de la Nova Estació until you meet the Greenway. From here, follow the old railway line in the direction of Alcañiz. On the first 15 kilometres of the route you will find some intersections shared with vehicles in a landscape that combines agricultural and urban areas and riparian vegetation.
During the first section of the route, Tortosa – Aldover – Xerta, you will enjoy an almost flat ride with direct views of the Ebro River, passing fruit trees and riverside woodland, as well as the old railway station in Aldover (km 9).
From Xerta, continue parallel to the Ebro River to enter the Canaleta Gorge where the most spectacular sections of the route begin. The transition to the Parc Natural dels Ports is through a series of tunnels and viaducts of the old railway, accompanied by spectacular nature and views of the remains of several old “masías”, or farmhouses.
During this section you pass through Estació de Benifallet to Estació de Pinell de Brai, where you join the Terra Alta Greenway towards Santuari de la Fontcalda, an open-air spa from where water emerges at temperatures of up to 28 degrees centigrade alongside a 14th century temple.
After this detour, go back to the Greenway to start the transition from mountain to the flat to Bot, where you can rest before your return to the hotel. At this point you will have already ridden over 35 kilometres.
This route is a 71-km round trip from and to the Hotel through more than 10 tunnels and bridges on the mountainous landscapes of the area that were witness to the old railway that ran between the villages of the Ebro.
