Cultural bike tour around Tortosa

This circular route around Tortosa is a relatively easy, mainly urban route that is ideal to do together with the younger members of the family. Everyone can enjoy a bike ride past some of the city’s most characteristic places. The route takes you along the banks of the Ebro River and through the urban areas of Tortosa to discover the city’s historical and industrial past.

With a total length of 6.47 kilometres, starting and finishing at the Hotel SB Corona Tortosa, this route explores the city’s urban landscapes from yesteryear and today. There is a total height gain of 17 m, with climbs of less than 5%, the highest being the climb up to the circular Túbal Tower that overlooks Tortosa Castle in a strategic location between the city and the Ebro River. There are also flat parts at the initial and final stretches, and in parts of the riverside promenade. The highest point on the route is at kilometre 4, at an altitude of 60 m above sea level.

Leave the Hotel heading towards the Ebro and the city centre, then take Carrer de Juan Sebastián Elcano towards Plaça de Francesc Macià i Llussà, a large space which combines rest areas with green spaces for recreation. Continue along Carrer de Migdia, a pleasant and mostly residential street with slow traffic that gradually takes you towards the river until you find yourself in front of it with a splendid panoramic view of the city’s riverside façade and the Ebro and its bridges on its way through Tortosa.

With the first challenge of the day completed, keep cycling downstream along Rambla Felip Pedrell leaving behind the bridge on Avinguda de Cristòfol Colom until reaching the Pont Roig Bridge. Here you can change direction to cross the bridge safely along a stretch of the Greenway. The views from the bridge are delightful!

Having enjoyed the views of the city, the route now hugs the river following the riverside promenade downstream, taking the same route along the other bank along Rambla Felip Pedrell, crossing much of the city to explore urban landmarks and the most important places of historical interest like the Municipal Market, Episcopal Palace, Cathedral of Santa María, Montagut Palace and the Museum of Tortosa, where you will start to climb again to Plaça de Sant Jaume, Plaça de la Immaculada and the Jardins del Príncep.

After admiring the Cathedral, cycle up to and visit the circular Túbal Tower which watches over Tortosa Castle, offering spectacular views of the city. The last stretch of the ride crosses the historic centre of the city, passing characteristic sites like the Casa Blau and Plaça d’Alfons XII.

Just before the Ebro comes into sight again, go round the edge of the railway line for a few metres before reaching Teodoro González Park. You can either go round the park, or cross it to get back to the Pont Roig bridge where you go over the river again and take the Greenway back to the Hotel.
