Family bike route through the Natural Heritage of Tortosa

This circular route is one of the easiest and most enjoyable routes for the younger members of the family as it is a flat and safe ride through Tortosa city centre. It focuses on enjoying the riverside promenade, and is a pleasant and flat urban route that reveals some of the city’s most characteristic locations. This ride takes you along the banks of the Ebro River and to the urban areas of Tortosa to rediscover the natural delights of the city, as well as the start of the Val del Zafán Greenway.

Leave the Hotel, heading away from the river along Avinguda Ports Tortosa-Beseit and immediately take the third exit off the first roundabout. Follow a flat and straight route to reach the Camí dels Condonyers. You could join the Greenway at this intersection and head towards the Ebro Observatory, but this time turn left to pedal towards the river where the riverside route along its two banks begin.

After crossing the river over the Pont Roig bridge, the route goes downstream along the riverbank through a small strip of park that connects the riverbank with Teodoro González Park, the green lungs of the city. Cross the park and take the path that passes the Felip Pedrell Auditorium to come back to Teodoro González Park, which you should cross to admire the nature and the architecture displayed in buildings like La Llotja, fine examples of work by renowned local architects.

Leave the park heading towards the Rambla Felip Pedrell to go up the river and enjoy views of the riverside, as well as the city and its bridges. Ride along the promenade to see the Episcopal Palace, Bisbat de Tortosa and Montagut Palace.

After passing the Palace, the view changes slightly and you enter a greener area which is home to some of the buildings of the Universitat Vira i Virgili. Ride round them and start your return trip through Avinguda Remolins, a buzzing thoroughfare with a relaxed atmosphere and lots of university bars. Pass the Museum of Tortosa and Plaça de l’Escorxador where you will catch sight of the river again.

A good place to take a stop is next to the Cathedral of Santa María de Tortosa, then pass through the narrow streets that surround it on your way back to the Ebro River, where you pedal downstream to cross the Pont Roig bridge again and head back to the Hotel.
